Rootstack

AI agent for credit processing and evaluation

Rootstack implemented an AI agent for credit processing and evaluation, capable of orchestrating

the complete credit assessment workflow across multiple banking systems.

Why Rootstack?

Rootstack

The bank sought to reduce the operational effort required to process credit applications while maintaining the controls, policies, and decision criteria required by its lending operations. Rootstack was selected to build an AI agent capable of coordinating the credit evaluation process across multiple systems, combining document analysis, customer information, credit bureau data, business rules, and decision-support capabilities through MCP.

The solution was designed to automate process coordination rather than give the AI unrestricted authority to approve credit. The agent gathered evidence, performed predefined analyses, identified exceptions, and prepared a structured recommendation for the responsible credit decision-maker.

Challenge

The bank's credit application process required analysts to manually coordinate information from multiple systems before reaching a credit decision. A typical application involved reviewing the request, validating customer information, checking supporting documents, extracting financial data, consulting the credit bureau, reviewing the existing banking relationship, applying credit policies, analyzing risk indicators, requesting missing information, and preparing the application for approval or rejection.

This process generated long processing times, high operational workloads, repetitive analyst activities, inconsistencies between applications, increased risk of manual errors, and limited scalability during periods of high demand.

The challenge was therefore to automate the coordination of this multi-step process without removing human oversight from critical credit decisions.

Our Solutions

Rootstack implemented an AI-powered credit processing and evaluation agent using an architecture based on AI agents, orchestration, MCP Tools, banking systems, document services, credit bureau integrations, and human approval.

The agent coordinated specialized capabilities including customer verification, document retrieval and analysis, credit bureau queries, account and transaction history, existing credit exposure, credit policy validation, risk calculations, and application status updates. It maintained the state of each application throughout the workflow and dynamically determined the next authorized step.

The automated workflow could receive a credit application, validate the customer, verify required documents, extract financial information, consult the credit bureau, retrieve banking history, evaluate credit rules, identify exceptions, prepare the credit assessment, request human approval, and update the application. This reduced the need for analysts to manually coordinate each stage.

MCP provided a controlled interface between the agent and the bank's systems. Rather than giving the agent direct access to databases or core banking systems, capabilities such as customer verification, account history, existing loans, credit bureau queries, income validation, document status, and application updates were exposed through authorized MCP Tools. Rootlenses governed the available tools, permissions, integrations, and execution conditions.

The solution also incorporated document processing capabilities for identity documents, proof of income, bank statements, tax documents, employment certificates, and financial statements. OCR/IDP services extracted relevant information into structured data that the agent could compare against the credit application, banking history, and credit bureau information to identify inconsistencies, missing documentation, outdated documents, or undisclosed obligations.

The architecture separated AI reasoning from deterministic credit rules. The agent could retrieve and interpret the applicable credit policy and invoke the rules or decision engine, while formal eligibility criteria remained deterministic. This ensured that the LLM was not the sole source of truth for regulated credit criteria.

Once the required information was collected, the agent generated a structured credit assessment containing the customer profile, requested amount, income information, existing credit exposure, bureau results, risk indicators, policy validations, missing information, detected inconsistencies, and recommended next action. The recommendation remained separate from the evidence used to generate it, allowing a credit analyst to review the information before making the final decision.

Human approval remained mandatory for defined high-impact credit decisions. Analysts could review the collected information, analyzed documents, bureau results, triggered rules, detected exceptions, and the agent's recommendation before approving, rejecting, requesting additional information, or escalating the application. The agent resumed the workflow only after receiving the required decision or instruction.

The agent could also automatically identify missing information and initiate follow-up workflows, such as requesting missing income documentation, notifying the customer, waiting for the document, and restarting the evaluation process. Exception handling covered missing documents, inconsistent customer information, unavailable credit bureau data, exceeded policy thresholds, incomplete financial information, suspicious data patterns, and requests outside the agent's authorized scope.

Strict guardrails were implemented for the credit workflow, including authorized MCP Tools, restricted system access, input and output validation, deterministic policy enforcement, operation and amount limits, human approval requirements, high-risk restrictions, complete auditing, and workflow execution limits.

The project was delivered over 6 months, automating 20+ credit workflow stages and integrating 12+ systems and services. The solution achieved an estimated 55% reduction in credit application processing time, with 70%+ of applications processed with AI assistance and an estimated 65% reduction in manual data capture. Analyst processing time was estimated to decrease by 45%, while 100% of defined high-impact decisions required human approval and 100% of AI workflow actions were audited.
