Rootstack designed and implemented an omnichannel architecture based on microservices, APIs, and Backends for Frontend (BFF), enabling a financial institution to unify its digital channels on a centralized and reusable platform.

A financial institution needed to modernize the way its digital channels interacted with its core banking systems. As its online banking platform, mobile application, and corporate banking services continued to expand, the organization required a scalable architecture capable of supporting consistent experiences and faster digital innovation across every customer touchpoint.
Rootstack was selected for its expertise in API-first architectures and microservices ecosystems for the financial industry. The project focused on building a flexible omnichannel platform without disrupting the bank’s ongoing operations.
As new digital channels were introduced, the bank experienced growing integration challenges and inconsistencies across its applications. Each channel had been developed independently, with its own integrations to the core banking system and duplicated business logic, making new feature development slower, increasing maintenance costs, and creating inconsistencies in the customer experience.
The institution needed a unified architecture capable of centralizing business capabilities, simplifying integrations with core banking systems, reducing the time required to launch new channels and features, and providing a scalable foundation for future digital expansion.
Rootstack designed and implemented an omnichannel architecture built on microservices, APIs, and dedicated Backend for Frontend (BFF) layers. The solution decoupled customer-facing applications from the bank’s core systems while organizing business capabilities into reusable services for domains such as customers, accounts, payments, and financial products. This approach ensured that every digital channel consumed the same centralized business logic, eliminating duplication and improving consistency.
To optimize the user experience across different platforms, Rootstack developed channel-specific BFFs for web, mobile, and other digital applications, while Kong API Gateway centralized API management, authentication, authorization, traffic control, and monitoring. Event-driven communication powered by Apache Kafka further enhanced scalability and enabled efficient synchronization between services.
The platform was secured using OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect (OIDC), with OpenTelemetry providing distributed tracing and end-to-end observability. Deployed on AWS, the architecture allowed each service to scale independently, supporting high availability and creating a technology foundation ready for continuous innovation and future digital growth.
