Rootstack designed and implemented a Payment Orchestration Platform based on a cloud-native microservices architecture, enabling intelligent transaction routing across multiple acquiring banks, payment processors, and financial networks.


The company processed millions of payment transactions through a single acquiring bank, creating operational risks whenever the provider experienced service interruptions, increased latency, or declining authorization rates.

The organization needed to optimize payment processing by dynamically routing each transaction to the most appropriate payment provider. Differences in processing costs, performance, geographic coverage, and availability across providers made it difficult to establish an efficient transaction routing strategy.
The company also needed to eliminate its dependency on a single acquiring bank, increase payment authorization rates, reduce processing costs, ensure business continuity during provider outages, and simplify the integration of new payment processors without increasing complexity for merchants.
Rootstack designed and implemented a Payment Orchestration Platform based on a cloud-native microservices architecture that introduced an orchestration layer between the existing payment gateway and multiple acquiring banks and payment processors. This layer centralized transaction routing logic and dynamically selected the most appropriate provider based on configurable business rules, real-time performance metrics, and transaction characteristics.
The platform incorporated an intelligent transaction routing engine responsible for evaluating variables such as card type, merchant location, transaction currency, processing costs, historical authorization rates, acquirer availability, and response latency. Based on these factors, the platform automatically routed each transaction to the provider with the highest probability of successful authorization, optimizing both performance and processing costs.
To decouple integrations, Rootstack implemented an abstraction layer with independent connectors for each acquiring bank and payment processor. This approach allowed the organization to add new providers, update integrations, and change routing strategies without impacting merchants. The API-first architecture also enabled merchants to maintain a single connection to the payment gateway while the orchestration platform managed communication with multiple providers behind the scenes.
The solution incorporated automatic failover mechanisms and asynchronous event processing to improve the resilience of the payment ecosystem. When an acquiring bank experienced service interruptions or degraded performance, transactions could be automatically redirected to an alternative provider. In addition, centralized monitoring dashboards provided visibility into authorization rates, response times, transaction volumes, errors, provider availability, and processing costs, enabling continuous optimization of routing strategies.
