Clinical interoperability with an HL7 and FHIR-based integration hub

HERO-HUB-IA 1

Introduction

Rootstack

A hospital group with multiple locations across Latin America—comprising hospitals, laboratories, and imaging centers—had expanded through acquisitions and urgent operational needs.

Its clinical and administrative systems, such as HIS, LIS, RIS/PACS, pharmacy, and billing, were connected via dozens of point-to-point interfaces, file transfer scripts, and manual data entry.

Each new integration took months, and every system failure required manual message tracing, posing tangible clinical and operational risks.

To address this challenge, the institution partnered with Rootstack to design and implement an event-driven clinical integration hub based on HL7 and FHIR standards, featuring a master patient index.
